Pallium offers a variety of LEAP courses to meet different needs.

2-day course for healthcare professionals working in the community

  • Target Learners: Healthcare professionals (mainly physicians, nurses, pharmacists but also others) whose primary focus of work is not palliative care but who in the course of their work care for patients with life-threatening and progressive life-limiting illnesses
  • Provides learners with the essential, basic competencies of the palliative care approach
  • Ideal for developing teamwork, promoting interprofessional collaboration, promoting collaboration amongst providers in different agencies who need to work together (e.g. community-based family physicians, home care nurses, community pharmacists, etc.)
  • Accreditation: This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 28 Mainpro+ credits.

1-day introductory palliative care course for healthcare professional teams working in the community

  • Target Learners: Healthcare professionals (mainly physicians, nurses, pharmacists but also others) working in the community whose primary focus of work is not palliative care but who, in the course of their work, care for patients with life-threatening and progressive life-limiting illnesses
  • Provides learners with the essential, basic competencies of the palliative care approach
  • Ideal for established teams (e.g. family health/medicine team or clinic), enhancing teamwork, promoting interprofessional collaboration, enhancing collaboration amongst providers in different agencies who need to work together (e.g. community-based family physicians, home care nurses, community pharmacists, etc.)
  • Accreditation: This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 16.50 Mainpro+ credits.

2-day palliative care course for healthcare providers working in Long-Term Care and Nursing Homes

  • Target Learners: Healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, as well as personal support workers (PSWs) or care aides and other regulated and unregulated care providers, who work in long-term care (LTC) and nursing homes, etc.)
  • Provides learners with the essential, basic competencies of the palliative approach to care
  • Ideal for developing teamwork and promoting interprofessional collaboration. Other personnel may also join (e.g. managers and support staff)
  • Accreditation: This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 26 Mainpro+ credits.

  • Target Learners: Paramedics and EMS professionals
  • Provide the essential practical knowledge, attitudes and skills to provide a palliative care approach
  • Link learners to local palliative care resources
  • Change practice to include palliative care on-site

  • Target Learners: Healthcare professionals (mainly physicians, nurses, pharmacists but also others) who work in cancer care but whose primary focus of work is not palliative care
  • Provides learners with the essential, basic competencies of the palliative care approach
  • Ideal for developing teamwork and promoting interprofessional collaboration, promoting collaboration amongst providers in different agencies who need to work together (e.g. community-based family physicians, home care nurses, community pharmacists, etc.)
  • Accreditation: This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for 7.5 hours.

  • Target Learners: Healthcare professionals (mainly physicians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists but also others) who work with patients with advanced kidney disease (i.e. primary focus of work is not palliative care)
  • Provides learners with the essential, basic competencies of the palliative care approach
  • Ideal for developing teamwork and promoting interprofessional collaboration
  • Accreditation: This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for 8.0 hours.

To be a LEAP Facilitator you need to have:

  • Clinical palliative care experience
  • Participated in a LEAP course
  • Relevant experience in educating professionals

Pallium Canada’s LEAP Facilitator Training Workshop will prepare learners to become a LEAP Facilitator and deliver LEAP courses.

Accreditation: This Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 50 Mainpro+ credits.
