Who is it for?

Caregiving is a role that most caregivers are thrust into with little to no preparation or training. LEAP Carers is ideal for anyone who provides care to a person with a serious illness or for anyone who wants to support a carer.

LEAP Carers is part of our Care Connections Program, a suite of free resources and activities to support the millions of Canadians who are caring for their family, friends, and members of their communities.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of LEAP Carers, learners should be able to:

  • Understand the basics of caring for someone with a serious illness.
  • Utilize knowledge of the health care system and palliative care approach to advocate for and coordinate care for their loved ones.
  • Facilitate Advance Care Planning discussions and understand key concepts related to end-of-life care.
  • Deliver personal care and hygiene while maintaining the dignity and comfort of the individual receiving care.
  • Implement effective medication management practices and address common symptoms associated with serious illnesses.
  • Develop and apply communication skills to interact with health care providers, the person receiving care, and family members.
  • Employ self-care strategies to maintain personal well-being and manage caregiver stress.
  • Understand what to expect at the end-of-life and provide compassionate support during this stage.
