Compassionate care in action.

After taking a LEAP course, Advance Care Paramedic Brock Browett learned the valuable role it plays in helping paramedics manage end-of-life care with empathy and expertise.

It’s hands down the best training I’ve taken in 10 years. It gave me the in-depth medical knowledge I need to communicate effectively with patients and health care professionals.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is a comprehensive and compassionate approach to care that improves the quality of life of individuals with life-limiting illnesses and their families. It provides relief from symptoms, pain, and stress while addressing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs throughout the illness journey. Palliative care is available to all patients with life-limiting illness regardless of age, prognosis, disease stage, or treatment choice.

  • Improves the quality of life for patients and families.
  • Reduces unnecessary or overly aggressive treatments and procedures.
  • Reduces emergency room visits and hospital stays.
  • Improves patient satisfaction and increases alignment between care delivered and patient preferences.
  • Lowers cost to the health care system.

Why does palliative care matter?

Palliative care is more than just managing physical symptoms; it treats the whole person. By addressing their emotional, social, and spiritual needs, palliative care helps individuals living with a life-limiting illness and their families live their life as fully and as comfortably as possible.

58%

of Canadians who died in 2021-2022 received palliative care.[1]

60%

of Canadian primary care physicians do not feel prepared to provide care for patients with palliative care needs.[2]

99%

of palliative home care patients have family or friends caring for them.[3]
